Going on a year abroad is an exciting prospect. If you’re getting ready for yours, no doubt half the people you know have told you how much of an “amazing time” you’re going to have.

G 7 MEETING PICTURE WITH NIGERIA PRESIDENT

French President François Hollande (second from left) gestured next to U.S. President Barack Obama (left) and other G7 summit participants and outreach delegates at a family picture event at the G7 summit at the Elmau castle in Krün near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, June 8, 2015. Reuters/Christian Hartmann
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari arrived in Germany Monday armed with a “wish list” for the Group of Seven summit, his spokesperson said in a statement. The newly elected president requested help on Boko Haram and Nigeria’s economy from G7 leaders at the summit in the Bavarian Alps, local media reported.
The G7 leaders invited Buhari to the summit along with other so-called outreach guests -- the leaders of Senegal, Ethiopia, Liberia, South Africa, Tunisia and Iraq. Climate change topped the agenda for the final day of the two-day summit, at which the world leaders also discussed African development, the fight against terrorism from Boko Haram to the Islamic State group as well as combating epidemics and other health issues. Buhari was expected to receive ample support from the G7 industrialized nations given the challenges they faced engaging with Nigeria’s previous administration of Goodluck Jonathan, experts said.
“I think there is very strong goodwill towards Nigeria,” Tim Murithi, head of program at the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in Cape Town, South Africa, said in an interview with Deutsche Welle. “So Buhari is in what you would call a honeymoon period at the moment, and I believed the rest of the world, the international community, would like to see Nigeria play a much more pivotal role in Africa, which historically it has played.”

World Leaders Pledge to Restore Teacher Respect

Applications and nominations are now open for the Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize 2016. At the same time, former world leaders are calling on governments around the world to protect and value teachers, and play their part in restoring the respect that teachers so richly deserve. The Varkey Foundation and Club de Madrid have joined forces to publish this open letter from leaders around the world:
From: Former World Leaders
To: Global Education Ministers
Re: The Importance of Restoring Teacher Respect
In most societies at most times throughout history, teachers have been among the most respected members of their communities.
Sadly, this respect has been eroded. According to opinion research in 21 countries by the Varkey Foundation, less than a third of parents in most countries say that they would definitely encourage their children to become teachers.  When asked to rank teachers against other professions, only in China did people think that they enjoyed the same status as doctors. Frequently the ills of society are laid at the door of teachers. They are blamed for everything from a decline in manners among young people to a lack of basic skills in the workplace. They have even, on occasion, been blamed for a country’s poor economic performance. Too often politicians see teachers as an easy target for short-term political gain.
The effects of this are profoundly damaging to the life chances of the next generation. If teachers aren’t respected in society, children won’t listen to them in class, parents won’t back their teachers, and the most talented graduates will continue to disregard teaching as a fulfilling career option. Over time, this declining respect for teachers will weaken teaching, damage the learning opportunities for millions and ultimately weaken societies around the world.  An uneducated citizenry can weaken cherished democratic institutions such as parliament and the free press.  Uninformed democratic choices can give way to populism and even extremism.
Right now, we need teachers more than ever. We need great teachers to foster great minds. Otherwise, we will never tackle the problems facing the world — from climate change to conflict, disease and poverty.  Human civilization only moves forward because teachers are there behind the scenes, sparking creativity, encouraging people on, guiding and pointing the way forward.
We call on governments around the world to protect and value teachers, and play their part in restoring the respect that they so richly deserve.

PhD studies in Canada: A dilemma for international students

Canadian society and the Canadian academy are proud of their openness and diversity. Every year, thousands of international students are encouraged to embark upon undergraduate and graduate studies at Canadian institutes of higher education. Indeed, the drive amongst Canadian universities to attract top-quality international students in greater numbers is intensifying. And yet, there is a significant systemic problem for those international students in the arts and humanities who undertake doctoral studies in Canada.

GRE Increasingly Popular for International Business Students

The number of students taking the Graduate Record Examinations, or GRE, has been steadily increasing over the past few years.
However, its growth is due less to American graduate applicants and more to international students applying to U.S. graduate business programs, according to Bloomberg Business.
GRE Use Rises
The total number of GRE takers has grown by 3% between 2013 and 2014, and by 12% since 2009. But the number of U.S. students taking the exam actually dropped over the same time period, from 445,135 in 2009 to 422,668 in 2014.
The decrease may be caused by a drop in the number total U.S. graduate school applicants who preferred to find jobs in an improving economic climate rather than going back to school, Bloomberg explained.
