University of Oxford nominates first female vice-chancellor in its 800-year history

The University of Oxford has nominated its first female vice-chancellor in its 800-year history. Professor Louise Richardson, who is currently principal at St Andrews University, is set to take up the role at the start of next year, subject to the approval of the institution’s legislative body.
She has been put forward by a nominating committee led by Oxford’s chancellor, Lord Patten of Barnes.
The appointment will make Professor Richardson the only female holder of the post at Oxford since the first leader was selected in 1230.
Professor Richardson, who is also St Andrews’ first female principal, revealed last year that she had been taunted by members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club after they excluded her because she was a woman. Honorary membership of the club is a traditional perk of running St Andrews but when she was appointed in 2009 the tradition was abruptly abandoned. The ban was subsequently overturned in September last year.

China executes teacher for sexually abusing 26 girls

ClassroomChina's top court said it has executed a primary school teacher found guilty of raping or sexually abusing 26 girls.
Li Jishun had committed the crimes between 2011 and 2012 while teaching at a village school in Gansu province.
He preyed on pupils aged 4 to 11 who were "young and timid", according to a statement by the Supreme People's Court reported by local media.
It said there have been more than 7,000 child sex abuse cases in recent years and that the trend is on the rise.

'Grave threat'

Li had raped 21 of his victims and sexually abused the other five in classrooms, dormitories, and the forest surrounding the village near Wushan town.
The statement said that some of his victims had been raped or abused more than once. It made no mention of how he was caught.
But it said that the Gansu court had found him "a grave threat to society" and noted that he had committed the crimes within just one year.
"The Supreme People's Court thus believes that it was appropriate for Li Jishun to be executed," it said.
Local media ran the story with caricatures of the man depicting him as a wolf gobbling up children.
His sentencing was met with widespread approval on China's microblogging platform Weibo, with many expressing shock at the youth of his victims.
"Four years old? I can't believe it," said one. "A death sentence is too good for this man," wrote another commenter.
In a rare disclosure of abuse statistics, the Supreme People's Court told local media that the courts heard 7,145 cases of child sexual abuse between 2012 and 2014.
The figures showed that the number of cases went up by about 40% during those years.

College of Education, Ankpa to Start Degree Programme This Year

Dr Mrs Agnes Okai - Commissioner for Education
All processes including administrative, structural and academic that would enable Kogi State College of Education to commence degree progamme are on top gear.
The Provost of the institution, Professor Danladi Musa, disclosed this in an exclusive chat with The Graphic in his office.
Professor Musa averred that if there is anything that is of greater concern to the management for now, it is how to get the degree programme running this year.
He revealed that virtually all the courses for the degree programme have already been accredited, saying that the administration of Captain Idris Wada had been quite helpful in that direction.
The provost, who maintained that the college is doing everything possible to maintain high standard, noted that the institution remains top in the ranking of the supervising body of Colleges of Education in the country.
When the institution commences its degree programme, the provost expressed optimism that it would reduce the problem often faced by teachers in securing university education in their quest to further their education.
He noted that the institution has been alive to its responsibility of training quality teachers, pointing out that when it starts running degree programme, it would have moved a step further.
Professor Musa who revealed the plan of the management in the physical development, said plans are underway to embark on massive construction works in the institution, adding that the projects are being supported by the state and other education-sponsoring bodies.
The professor also spoke on measures being taken to secure lives and property in the institution, pointing out that before long, restrictions would be placed on vehicular movement on the campus.
The college, he disclosed, is also eagerly preparing for NACEGA competition scheduled to hold within the year and according to him, going by the level of preparation, the college would make a good showing at the competition.
The provost, who charged the students of the college to imbibe the culture of academic hard work, however, cautioned them to shun all kinds of moral decadence so as not to dent their image and that of the college.

Chibok Girls And The Significance Of Malala's Visit To Nigeria By Inibehe Effiong

Contrary to the pessimistic and cynical views expressed by some Nigerians on the practical relevance and functional usefulness of the very historic visit to Nigeria by Malala Yousafzai, the home truth is that the struggle for the release of the over 200 Chibok girls from the excruciating captivity of Boko Haram has taken a new dimension.
Born on 12 July, 1997, Malala Yousafzai, a spirited Pakistani teenager is a school pupil and education activist from the town of Mingora in the Swat District of Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. In the afternoon of Tuesday, 9 October, 2012, Malala had boarded her school bus when a gunman asked for Malala by name, pointed a Colt 45 at her and fired three shots, she survived. Her offence was defying the Taliban's ban on girls from attending school.

Two Teenage Brothers Build Mobile Web Browser

Two brothers, Osine Ikhianosime and Anesi Ikhianosime built a mobile web browser that is already in use globally. Osine Ikhianosime 13, and Anesi Ikhianosime 15 who co-developed ‘Crocodile Browser Lite’ were born of same parents and both are students of Greensprings School, Anthony Campus, Lagos. While both brothers write code, Anesi designs the user interface.
Osine Ikhianosine and Anesi Ikhianosime
Osine and Anesi launched the mobile browser on the Mobango app store before moving to Google Play Store to try and reach a wider audience. As you read this piece, the browser currently has around 100 to 500 downloads and they do not have ads in the app yet. They both began developing an Android web browser, which they named Crocodile Browser Lite, about a year ago out of boredom.
Due to their strong interest  in technology, they decided to create a functional, fast browser for feature and low end phones because, according to them, “We were fed up with Google Chrome.” Osine who told TechCabal in his pitch mail said: ‘’I write the code, my brother designs it.”
Born April 28, 2001, his interest in computers began at age seven. It was also at this age that he and his brother, Anesi Ikhianosime, who was 9 at the time, came up with the idea of starting a company.
Recalling how it started, Osine said, they first named it ‘Doors’ with Microsoft’s Windows, but when they discovered that the name was already in use, they had to change the name to BluDoors. Relating his experience, Osine said: ‘’When we decided to learn to code at age 12 and 14 respectively, I didn’t let my uncle’s belief that it would be a tough feat to achieve deter me.”
On his part, Anesi said: “I learnt to code by myself. I started in 2013, I used sites like Code Academy, Code Avengers and books like ‘Android for Game Development’ and ‘Games for Dummies’,” said Anesi. Meanwhile their mother, Mrs Ngozi Ikhianosime, who is a Mathematics teacher said: “Osine could already use a PC before he could read at age three. It is all he does since he learnt to code.”
The mother who ascribed the success to Greensprings Schools, said students of the school have access to computer and internet facilities, just as personal laptops are made available to each of them at home. “After Anesi is through with his secondary school education, he will attend A levels, after which he will go to MIT in Boston for his first degree, because the university has the facilities he needs to learn.” She said.
Their father Mr Philip Ikhianosime, who is the Head of Management Services and Human Resource Manager at an Insurance Company says the boys developed interest in PC usage very early. He agrees as well, that his children’s school is very instrumental in their continued interest in programming.
Anesi says that he’d like to develop another app that solves real social problems, such as traffic and communication.

ASUU Says All Universities Established By Jonathan's Administration Are Illegal

The National President, of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr. Issa Fagge Nasir has stated that the 16 universities and other higher institutions established by the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, lack the necessary legal backing and so may be living on borrowed time.

He said this while commenting on the four Colleges of Education upgraded to Universities by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

In his words, “Our quarrel with the government is that universities are not just established by executive fiats like this administration is doing. So the Federal Government is only compounding the problems already bedeviling the education sector and I wonder if the incoming administration will allow this to stand.

“Strictly speaking, the Federal Government is not respecting its own laws, and I wonder how you just transmute an institution without looking at its laws. What happens to its staff, facilities and infrastructure?”

He further stated that the 500M Naira released by the Goodluck led administration as take-off grant to the universities is not even enough to fund training of staff not to talk of infrastructural Upgrade.

He finally called on the incoming administration to critically assess these decisions and make impartial judgment that will benefit the mass of the people and return the country’s education sector’s lost glory.

Erasers are an ‘instrument of the devil' which should be banned, says academic

Schoolchildren, or students as they are now, still want pencil-cases
No more erasers, says Guy Claxton Photo: Alamy

Erasers are an ‘instrument of the devil' and should be banned from classrooms because they encourage children to feel ashamed about mistakes, a King’s College visiting professor says.
Guy Claxton, who is also a cognitive scientist, said schools should encourage students to acknowledge their mistakes because that’s the way the “big wide world” works and move away from placing too much importance on grades.
His comments followed research that has suggested resilience and curiosity are two essential ingredients for pupils’ success.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, professor Claxton said: “The eraser is an instrument of the devil because it perpetuates a culture of shame about error. It’s a way of lying to the world, which says ‘I didn’t make a mistake. I got it right first time.’ That’s what happens when you can rub it out and replace it.
“Instead, we need a culture where children are not afraid to make mistakes, they look at their mistakes and they learn from them, where they are continuously reflecting and improving on what they’ve done, not being enthralled to getting the right answer quickly and looking smart.
"They need to be interested in the process of getting the right answer because that’s what it is like in the big wide world.
Cognitive scientist Guy Claxton
He added: “Ban the eraser, get a big road sign with an eraser and put a big, red bar across it and get kids to say you don’t scrub out your mistakes, highlight them because mistakes are your friends, they are your teachers.
“Out in the big wide world nobody is going to be following you around, marking your work, organising your time for you, in the 21st century you are going to be the designer, the architect, the curator of your own learning.”
His point about banning erasers in the classroom are part of a wider debate about moving away from just grades and work on building character in students to prepare them for their working lives.
The author of Educating Ruby, a book that deals with how to build character in students, said: “School should not be just a place for getting right answers to pass tests, it should be a real preparation for all kids to embark on life. We should narrow the gap between what learning is like in the real world and the way it is configured in school.”
Professor Claxton cited the research US author Paul Tough, whose book How Children Succeed, showed resilience and curiosity help children do better in their exams but also in life.
