A complete transition in mood, the ones of positivity, freedom and happiness were the clear expressions observed in students of Unilorin after weeks of stress which is attributed to first semester examinations for 2014/2015 academic session (Aminat Afolabi, 400level chemistry student reports)
Concentration was at the peak with absence of fun or social activities in air on campus during the examination period. All forms of activities which may cause distraction were kept at bay. This is because irrespective of scholastic ability, each and every student thrive to pass examinations. Result of such examinations is a crucial yardstick for monitoring progress of students in their education.
As students had experienced stress in the past few weeks, most students planned to embark on journey to visit their respective families after the examination. Oludoyin, a 300 level Health Education student said she won't entertain any form of delay on campus but will travel down home immediately afterwards to afford enough rest and care from loved ones.
The institution, according to its academic calendar will go on a week semester break. This can be beneficial for students to rest for a while, and regroup for the second half of the session. Most of university hostels well-known for noise and busy schedules are now as silent as graveyards since several students are already with their loved ones for the break.
Also, Adeola, 400 level chemistry student said that the semester break is a period for her to rest after the stress of examination
However, a category of some students are left behind in the school premises during the break which are majorly final year students who needed to stay back in order to further drive their research projects which is important requirement before they can bag their bachelor degrees.
Eateries and other groceries selling points on campus do experience low sales as the number of students patronizing them is very few relative to turnout of sales during academic session. After the commencement of examination, various retail outlets had stopped stocking some goods, especially those that are perishable so that they will not run a loss when the students eventually go for break.
The completion of the examinations also gave students the chance to celebrate the annual valentine with their loved ones, although some students see the day as a normal day while others see it as a special day.
Akorede, 400 level Chemistry student shared his own view on the valentine. He believes every day is a blessing and love should be shared daily rather than concrete all-out party of most people who shares love only on a chosen day throughout the year. He added that, to the multitude celebrating the day, they are advised to take caution in their activities and not overrun their capabilities.
