Michelle Obama to land in Stansted tonight ahead of education conference

First Lady Michelle Obama will be flying into Stansted Airport this evening in time for a London conference where she will show her support for the education of young women.

Mrs Obama will land in the Essex airport without her husband, US President Barack Obama, at 8pm this evening (Monday, June 15).
The 51-year-old lawyer is visiting the UK as part of the Let Girls Learn initiative, to visit Mulberry School for Girls in Tower Hamlets, East London tomorrow where she will discuss with students how the US and UK are aiming to expand access to education for girls globally.
Her stop in London follows her recent visits to Japan and Cambodia.
After a day of round-table discussions, the First Lady will have tea with Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha, at 10 Downing Street.
Mrs Obama will be flying out of Stansted again at 11am on Wednesday.
The first lady previously landed in Stansted Airport when she accompanied her husband on March 31, 2009 - two months after his inauguration as 44th President of the United States - when they arrived in Air Force One ahead of the G20 summit in London.
Prior to that, American presidents had flown into Heathrow Airport for visits to the UK, but after George W Bush's last arrival caused chaos, preparations were made for an alternative destination for President Obama and Stansted became the front-runner as a result of its extensive private facilities.
